This book lives up to its editorial review! Even though the book is directed to young adults, it has value for all adults. Each chapter contains touching and beautiful stories of simple and complex love of God and Church. Each author was honest and direct about his/her journey in faith. Their experiences brought back wonderful, as well as, difficult memories of my own. You don’t have to be Catholic to enjoy this book. The format makes it an excellent book for busy people, because the chapters are short and nothing is lost if you have to set the book aside for awhile; you can easily pick it up again later.

Young April lives in a “one cat” apartment with her mother, father, and cat, Sheba. The apartmeent they live in is so small that April has to sleep in a crib for a baby(that would be neglect now…)! When Sheba has kittens,April, as any girl, wants to keep all three of the kittlers along with Sheba. her father want let her keep all of them, not even two of them. But she has to think of something. Does she give up the kittens and keep the beloved Sheba? Or does she keep the kitten she affectionatly names Brenda?

Well she kind of does both; she gives away the other two kittens away and keeps Sheba and Brenda. The family decides get a larger apartment( a two-cat apartment). When I read on the back that April finds a perfect solution I thought she would find a cever way to keep all four cats. Is it just me or is this a not-so-perfect solution. But at least the art is perfect.

Clare Newberry’s drawings are very beautiful and seem to match the book’s text perfectly.

Though not a work of apologetics, it isn’t afraid to tackle controversial subjects where the Church’s teaching is clear. Under the entry “Women, Ordination of” the following definition is given: “The exclusion of women from ordination is found in the expressed will of Christ, Who called men alone to be His Apostles, and it has been the constant tradition and teaching of the Church that women are ineligble to receive the Sacrament of Orders. This is not a reflection on the dignity of women, but rather because of the relationship between Christ as Spouse and the Church as Bride. In 1976, the declaration of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, ‘Inter Insigniores’, dealt with this matter in a detailed and authoritative manner, followed by the irreformable document of Pope John Paul II, ‘Ordinatio Sacerdotalis’, in 1994. CCC 1577-1578″

Celibacy, much in the news in recent years, also is given thoughtful treatment: “The discipline of the Latin Church that forbids the ordination of married men. Celibacy is perfect continence and is meant to foster imitation of Christ, Who gave up all, including the right to marry and have children, to serve His father. A married man may be ordained to the diaconate but generally cannot remarry if his wife dies. Jesus Himself (Mt 19:11-12) and St. Paul (1 Cor 7:32) encouraged celibacy, as did the Council of Elvira (306). The Eastern Church allows deacons and priests who are married before ordination to remain so; however, bishops are required to be celibate. CCC 915, 1579-1580, 1599″

With fourteen stories and personal essays written by popular authors such as Sara Zarr, Carolyn Mackler, Ellen Hopkins, and more, this book is quite amazing. The stories all focus on the weight and body image issues that most everyone has at one point in their life.

Whether it’s feeling overweight or thinking you’re too skinny, how you feel that your breasts are either way too small or way too big, everyone has issues with their bodies.

Not much else I can really say about this book. I actually loved each and every one of the stories, and that really surprised me. I thought at least one or two of them I probably wouldn’t end up liking.

I’d recommend DOES THIS BOOK MAKE ME LOOK FAT? to anyone who has issues with their body and even to people who don’t. Every single story is just written so well. I didn’t want to finish the last one when I got to it.

The only thing wrong with this book: it should have been longer!
